Advice from a Firehouse Legend, Pt. 2 – The 7 C’s of Leadership

Tommy always lived by what he called the 7 C's.

He never actually explained them.

He would just look at you deadpan and say something cryptic like:

"The 7 C's, brother."

We always thought he was saying "The Seven Seas," and I think he enjoyed our confusion.

Over time, we figured out what he meant.

The 7 C’s

Character

Deciding what matters to you and dedicating your life to it.

Concentration

The ability to focus and find flow. To lay waste to frivolous distraction.

Commitment

Devotion to people and endeavors that align with your purpose.

Courage

The intensity with which you are called to live can be frightening. Courage is faith in action.

Competency

The ability to perform your work with precision and skill.

Craftsmanship

To perform your work with care. To perform your work with your whole being and elevate your output to the level of beauty.

Class

Living well, living artfully. Living beautifully. Having good taste.

This was Tommy through and through.

Tommy Matolla was a legend.

And a role model.

Trust me, you'd do well to take his advice.
