Why Firefighters Defend the Job — Even When it's Broken

Two firefighters in turnout gear operate a hoseline during a defensive fire attack, with water arcing into heavy smoke in the background.

Why Do We Care?

Some days that can be a hard question to answer.

But.

The fire department has given us so much.

It gave us comfort.

It gave us friends.

It gave us pride, identity.

It toughened us.

It helped us provide.

It gave a structure to our life that we needed to be better men.

Those things came at a price.

But we won’t stand by and watch the heart of the fire department dissolve.

And become another sterile, characterless, soulless prison of cynical indifference and mediocrity.

We won’t watch as it becomes corporate.

We won’t watch as it is forgotten.
